Ardra BUDS Special School (also known as Aardra Special School) is a municipal rehabilitation center in Cherthala, Kerala, dedicated to supporting differently-abled and intellectually challenged individuals. 

It operates under the local LSGI (Local Self-Government Institution) as part of the state-wide BUDS school network, which provides specialized care and daily living training.

Haritha Karma Sena (HKS)

Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) is a community-based waste management workforce operating under Local Self-Government Institutions (LSGIs) in Kerala. It is an important part of the state's solid waste management system and is responsible for collecting and managing non-biodegradable (dry) waste from households, commercial establishments, and institutions.

Objectives

  • Ensure scientific management of non-biodegradable waste.
  • Promote waste segregation at the source.
  • Reduce environmental pollution caused by plastic and other dry waste.
  • Improve cleanliness and public health.
  • Generate sustainable livelihood opportunities, especially for women.

Key Responsibilities

  • Door-to-door collection of non-biodegradable waste.
  • Encourage households and institutions to segregate waste at the source.
  • Transport collected waste to Resource Recovery Facilities (RRFs) or authorized recycling units.
  • Conduct public awareness campaigns on waste management and sanitation.
  • Collect user fees for waste collection services.

The Cherthala FSTP is located at Anathara Veli, Cherthala Municipality, Alappuzha. It is the first faecal sludge treatment plant in Alappuzha district, with a treatment capacity of 250 KLD (250,000 litres per day). The plant uses Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology to scientifically treat septage collected from septic tanks. The treated water is intended for reuse (such as irrigation of green belts), while the stabilized sludge can be processed into manure

Smart Septage Collection System

This waste management app is designed to simplify the booking and collection of septage waste (liquid waste from septic tanks) for households, businesses, and institutions. It operates like a ride-hailing service, where users can request a waste collection, and the nearest available collection vehicle is assigned the task.

Septage Collection System

Cherthala Municipality is expanding its septage collection system by integrating private operators in the sector. The municipal council has passed a bylaw to regulate and monitor private septage collection services. Private operators can now register online with the municipality to obtain a license.
